Artificial Intelligence in Design Disciplines: Theoretical Approaches, Methodological Explorations, and Critical Evaluations

ARTIUM is a scientific-academic journal that focuses on all aspects of design and its interdisciplinary applications with an open-minded approach; it evaluates the assumptions and methods in its published works within the specific frameworks of the relevant disciplines. Published twice a year, in February and August, the journal’s publication languages are Turkish and English, and its official owner is Hasan Kalyoncu University, Republic of Turkey. This special issue is planned to be published in 2026 as Volume 13, Issue 3.

This special issue aims to open a discussion on the current, multifaceted, and rapidly transforming nature of the relationship between artificial intelligence and design. In recent years, artificial intelligence has become a powerful field transforming the ways in which design disciplines research, think, produce, represent, evaluate, and teach. AI-based tools, methods, and approaches are becoming increasingly visible in design, architecture, planning, landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design, visual communication design, digital art, and related fields. Today, a significant stage has been reached in the integration of AI into design disciplines. Research is deepening, tools are diversifying, and application examples are multiplying; however, the field’s literacy, critical language, evaluation criteria, theoretical framework, methodological limitations, ethical dimensions, and pedagogical implications are still evolving.

In the near future, the positioning of AI as a fundamental skill and competency area in design seems highly probable. Furthermore, the fact that many institutions are now addressing AI not only under the heading of “digital transformation” but as a development and expertise area in its own right in their strategic plans makes this discussion even more current and necessary.

In this context, this special issue is open to original studies that address the relationship between AI and design from theoretical, experimental, critical, and application perspectives. In addition to theory-focused discussions, case studies, tool development, methodology development, ethical issues, and pedagogy-oriented research are also included in the evaluation. Contributions are expected from academia, R&D, professional practice environments, and from within Turkey and abroad.
